Professor BC Choudhury – Trustee

Professor Choudhury is an Executive Trustee and the Principal Investigator of Aquatic Projects at WTI. A retired scientist from the Wildlife Insitute of India, he is a professional trainer and teacher in the field of wildlife conservation and resource management, and has trained wildlife managers, biologists and sociologists for over 30 years. He has conducted, supervised and coordinated over 30 research and management projects related to wildlife conservation, habitat and resource management all over India and Nepal, and has authored over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and technical reports.

Professor Choudhury is the Regional (Asia) Co-chair of the IUCN-SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group (MTSG) and Crocodile Specialist Group (CSG). He is a member of the IUCN-SSC Cetacean Specialist Group, the Freshwater Turtle and Tortoise Group, and the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group.

He is also an advisory member of the International Crane Foundation for India, and a member of the Research Committee on Ecosystem Service, the Zoo Management Evaluation Committee of the Central Zoo Authority, the Research Advisory Council of the Salim Ali Center for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), and of the Andhra Pradesh State Wildlife Advisory Board. He is a steering committee member of the UNDP-GEF EGREE project in Andhra Pradesh, an Advisor to Traffic – India and The Living Ganga Programme of WWF-India, and an Advisor to the Coast, Marine and Wetland programme of BNHS. He is a visiting professor at the Wildlife Institute of India, the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, and the ICFRE deemed University.

In 2005 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) for Outstanding Contribution to the Conservation of Indian Cranes, Sea Turtles and Crocodilians.

ABOUT TEAM WTI

What began as a three-member team in a small room in south Delhi in 1998, is today a family of about 150 professionals from diverse backgrounds - conservation biologists, scientists, sociologists, wildlife veterinarians, managers, lawyers, finance experts and communication specialists - but committed to the common cause of wildlife. They are based in any of the 15 field stations in remote parts of the country and a central coordinating office in the national capital region. An Executive Management Team comprising experienced conservationists, scientists and managers provide a visionary leadership to the vibrant and enthusiastic WTI team. The Board of Trustees of WTI comprises stalwarts who bring together a collective experience of many decades in the field of conservation, education and management.
