Mangroves

Mangroves are one of the unique coastal habitats. According to IUCN, one in every six mangrove sps are in danger of extinction due to coastal development. The ecosystem services provided by mangrove habitat for coastal communities are in the tune of USD 1.6 billion / year globally.

Mangroves play an important role in protecting shorelines from waves, winds and storms. They offer the best protection against tropical storms, storm surges and tsunamis, and are being replanted in certain areas where they have been felled in the past. The shore line protection service offered by mangrove is estimated to the tune of $1700/ha.

They are facing threats…

Areal extent of mangrove forests has declined by more than 65% over the past half century as a result of coastal development, aquaculture expansion and over-harvesting. It is estimated that a loss of about 35% of the world mangroves has resulted in a net loss of ~2 billion Kg of carbon stored as mangrove biomass, in turn increasing climate change related problems.

The competition

Unlike other terrestrial forests, mangrove forests are very much neglected. So, to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management and conservation the Kannur Kandal Project is organising a Short film competition aiming at budding filmmakers and conservationists.

Capture a story of mangrove conservation from your locality (it can be an issue, a solution or a conservation success) and send it to us as short film.
