FOR SUPPORTERS
Please read the following FAQs if you wish to volunteer for the White Winged Duck survey
- Where is the survey?
- The survey sites are across Arunachal Pradesh.
- How can I get selected?
- You must be at least 18 years of age and physically fit to walk wooded terrain and wade through streams. You must be an experienced birder with great spotting skills, sharp enough to differentiate between look-alikes of the white winged duck. Those who have published bird photographs and own photography gear have an added advantage.
- What is the duration of volunteering?
- You must be ready to spend at least 15 days at a stretch in the field. We need volunteers from February through November 2021.
- Can I take a break and return after a gap?
- A break can be allowed only after a stretch of 15 days of field work. Volunteers can be allowed to leave before their stipulated field engagement only in case of personal emergency, in which case, they will not be given the certificate of completion of survey work.
- Do I get compensated for this?
- The engagement is open only for avid birders who volunteer for this survey. Volunteers are expected to reach the nearest major city /town at their own expense. WTI will provide for transport to the survey site from the nearest city/town and will provide basic food and accommodation (in tents or IB if available).
- What do volunteers get?
- As a volunteer, you get access to camp in the most magnificent forests for a fortnight and live a life that many only dream of. You get the golden opportunity to walk in one of the global biodiversity hotspots with trained biologists and experienced nature guides. If you’re lucky, you get to spot, photograph and document the most elusive forest dwelling duck. Of course, all volunteers get a volunteer certificate.
- Who owns the photographs/videos I take?
- All media assets that you collect will be owned by you with WTI holding shared rights to use these for project documentation, fund-raising, project proposals and reports, films, collaterals and presentations. Credit will be given to the photographer for all such images or footage.

Are you a photographer? If you have a geo referenced image of the white winged duck in its natural habitat anywhere in the north-east India EXCEPT Nameri-Pakke and Dehing-Patkai, we offer you Rs 5000/- for your photo. Read on:
- Is this a contest for a Rs 5000/- prize?
- No, this is not a competition but we are looking for great images of a rarely seen species, hence the incentive of Rs 5000/- for your contribution.
- What kind of photos can I submit?
- You may send geo-referenced images in high resolution, at least 300 dpi of the white winged duck in its natural habitat anywhere in north-east India EXCEPT Nameri-Pakke and Dehing-Patkai. Images without location co-ordinates will not be eligible for the cash incentive.
- Why are images from Nameri-Pakke and Dehing-Patkai not eligible?
- We are looking at documenting the presence of the white winged duck from locations other than its current range. The bird has already been photographed on several sightings in Nameri-Pakke and Dehing-Patkai. Its presence in other locations and states of the north east will be of immense scientific value.
- What will you do with the images?
- All images will be used for a scientific publication with due credit to the contributor. A set of the best images would also be published on a special edition calendar for 2022 with due credit to the contributor.
- Do I retain rights over my photos?
- Your contributed images will be your copyright shared with WTI. We reserve the right to publish your contributed images in our collaterals and publications with your credit attribution. However you retain the right to the images for your own use.
- How do I submit my image/images?
- If you fulfil our conditions, you may send a low res thumbnail to Dr Samir Sinha on samir@wti.org.in . The thumbnail must carry related information on location, copyright and details on the original resolution. Once this is accepted and acknowledged, you would be required to send the original /Raw file with your bank details to claim the incentive.
Neither a birder nor a photographer?
You can still participate in conserving the White winged duck.
