WTI is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead habitat restoration strategies in the Garo Hills Landscape in Meghalaya within the long-term community based conservation project being implemented for over 20 years now. Working with the team, local district council and communities, the position will be responsible for delivering and executing the plan for the restoration of degraded forest patches in the landscape.

 Who we’re looking for

The incumbent will be responsible for day-to-day implementation of the programmatic activities and in project development, reporting, data management and analysis for the habitat restoration work in Garo Hills

Qualifications and skills

  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant subject like restoration ecology, botany, forest management and/or significant work experience of at least 2 years in a relevant field;
  • Demonstrable experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating delivery/work plans;
  • Experience in the design, planning, implementation, and management of conservation projects;
  • Proven experience of carrying out botanical field surveys;
  • Prior experience of working in a multicultural team is desirable.;
  • Data management and database skills are desirable;
  • Proven experience of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders including non-governmental organisations, academic, government stakeholders and individuals with various levels of skill
  • Experience of living and working in developing countries and in remote and basic field conditions
  • Understanding and experience of working for or with NGOs;
  • A good knowledge of ecological and botanical survey methodologies and practices is essential;
  • Skills in plant identification, nursery management, seed banking, planting, pest management and weed control are essential;
  • Fluent spoken and written English is essential
  • Analytical skills and proficient use of statistical software, ideally programme R; GIS skills

 

Broad responsibilities include

  1. Successful implementation of planned plantation/ Assisted Natural Regeneration work in the project. This will include identification of the patches, surveying adjacent forest patches, preparing inventory of available indigenous plants and undertaking the plantation, maintenance and gap filling works.
  2. Developing the wider programme and strategies for restoration of the Garo Green Spine
  3. Management of nursery to prepare saplings for plantation and deliver report
  4. Collection, management, analysis and reporting of the data
