Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) invites applications from individuals with at least 1-3 years of field experience as a Biologist for our Assam Hathi Conflict Mitigation component of Greater Manas Recovery Project.

Who we’re looking for

As our Biologist, you will be posted at Manas Tiger Reserve, in Assam and be responsible for field or on-site implementation of the projects’ activities under supervision and guidance of the reporting manager, and as per the technical and financial plan of the project.

Qualifications and skills

  • Masters in Zoology/Wildlife Sciences/Wildlife Conservation Action
  • Minimum 1-3 Years’ experience of working in the field, preferably with focus on wildlife conservation.
  • Past experience of working in the field of human-wildlife interactions will be preferred
  • Experience of working in team-based projects will be a plus.
  • At least a working knowledge of Assamese is a must for this position.

Broad responsibilities include

  1. Point person for implementation of the conflict mitigation component of the project
  2. Collection of data related to HEC in the project area
  3. Following appropriate scientific methodology: collect data, analyse and prepare report on the project initiative (Assam Haathi Project)
  4. Develop study design, analysis of data and take lead in writing technical reports and develop manuscripts for scientific and popular articles for publication under the guidance of their respective reporting mangers.
  5. Monitoring of the fence regularly and provide technical inputs to the fence management committees, technical persons engaged by the affected villagers
  6. Ensure the community involvement in the maintenance of the fence and regular payment to the person hired by the respective fence management committees.
  7. Responsible for all field level governmental and partner liaising at appropriate forums and local public relation needs in consultation with the PH.
  8. To organize meeting with the EDCs, Fence Management Committees, Haathi Watchers periodically to ensure the community engagement for reducing HEC
  9. To monitor elephant incursion attempts through the solar fence through sign surveys and camera trapping, and prepare quarterly report on elephant incursion and fence maintenance
  10. To assist in camera traps for forest path use and other alternate livelihood interventions whenever requires in the project area
